    This 100% dead on the money. Working on my legato and timing with my fretting hand has improved everything. My picking hand is fast, fluid, and locked in, but my fretting hand still needs lots of work.

      Exactly. Getting control over your fretting unlocks everything, whether it's the solo to Freebird or Tornado of Souls 👍🎸

    I'm a lefty but i play right handed. My picking has always suffered. My legato is fine because my left hand is capable. I've basically been at a plateau for 25 years.

    I've been practicing legato with my thumb behind the neck, which feels so foreign to me because I'm self taught and played the other way for over 20 years. I can definitely feel soreness which leads me to wonder if I'm just working out unused muscles or if I'm doing something wrong and causing more harm than good.

      Hi man, I definitely recommend starting here... the best thing to do when coming back from a lay-off is working on the foundational strength/stamina of fretting and picking hand. The Warm Up will do that for you... then go onto Maximum Guitar Gains 👍 courses.benhigginsofficial.com/freecourses

    I'll just keep trying to gallop at more than 120 BPM until I can, for now. I do appreciate that one should keep finding new things to work at in order to progress.

  • @AAAA-lt9hq
    @AAAA-lt9hq 5 днів тому

    If I can add anything to this it is *practice songs that utilize the techniques you want to improve so practicing is more fun and useful.* Exercises are not practical. Songs are. As an example I am recording a cover of Metallica's "Dyer's Eve." 16th notes at 195 bpm. Why? My right hand alternate picking is weak. Dimebag himself said once he didn't really have a structured practice routine. He just played. By this I assume he meant songs he liked. On the other side of that there is John Petrucci who has a filing system that meticulously organizes everything he wants to practice and breaks it down into small daily routines. He discussed this in his old "Wild Stringdom" column in "Guitar World."

    Use light if you like them. It’s doesn’t matter to the sound, really. Lighter = frequency balance biased hi-mid a little more Heavier = frequency biased low-mid a little more Both of those can be reversed with eq before the amp. But! Heavier have MORE sustain, not less. But the difference is tiny with amp compression and distortion, not something like o care about. And, the reason I use standard gauge, they don’t break as easily. Ok, that’s my playing style and I’d rather have a testicle removed than be compared to the widdle widdlers like Satriani and Malmsteen. SRV is not exactly to my taste, but I find him a lot more musical than those previous examples. But you do you. I’m actually thinking of checking out some 9s, now that there’s all this noise about gauges. Just to see if my experience in the early 80s when I switched is still valid.

    Just discovered this video ramdomly and I must admit, this is the best review of my alltime favourite album ever. It's crazy that after 36 years I finally find a person who has had EXACTLY the same feelings as me about Seventh Son. Dickinson's phrasing and intonation, his grim yet majestic performance, unmatched by any metal singer to this day, sounds like that of a giant. As the album has strong mystic tale touch, while recorded between massive ancient castle walls. While I used to play C64 video games, especially the game Defender of the crown in 1988 as a child and listening to the Seventh Son -cassette for hours, weeks, later months, it created one of the most intense memory of my childhood.
